Harp Lessons at Sea: 5 Reasons to Book Our 2027 Discover The Harp Cruise

Imagine waking to the sound of the sea, exploring historic Celtic landscapes by day and discovering the beautiful voice of the harp as part of your holiday. In 2027, Cambrian Harps and Discover The Harp invite harpists, beginners and music lovers to join us for two exceptional voyages combining travel, culture and interactive music enrichment.

Whether you are taking your first steps, returning to an instrument you once played or looking for fresh inspiration as an experienced harpist, these cruises offer a memorable way to learn, play, perform and enjoy music together.

Here are five reasons to book your place.

1. Learn the harp in the landscapes that shaped Celtic music

There is something uniquely powerful about learning an instrument while travelling through the places connected with its musical heritage. The harp has a fascinating history across Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and our 2027 voyages bring that story to life through talks, workshops and performance.

The Majestic Princess group cruise travels from Southampton through destinations including Cornwall, Cork, Belfast, Shetland and Invergordon before returning to Southampton. Along the way, participants can explore the Celtic roots of the harp and discover how traditional music continues to evolve.

The programme can include:

  • Cumulative 45-minute beginner harp workshops
  • Talks exploring Celtic harp traditions
  • Lecture-recitals such as From Belfast to The Highlands and Islands , The Story of the Harp in Ireland and Scotland
  • Harps of the North Atlantic: Celtic Legends in Story and Song
  • At-sea sessions for technique refinement, practice and ensemble playing

At Invergordon, participants can enjoy a workshop with a Scottish harper. In Shetland, our cross-instrumental workshop with the Shetland Fiddlers will blend Welsh harp heritage with Scottish fiddle music, a truly distinctive musical meeting across the North Sea.

2. Learn from a highly qualified and experienced musical director

The quality of teaching is central to every Discover The Harp experience. Our Musical Director, Helen-Elizabeth, is an award-winning instructor with a BA Hons, DipABRSM, CTABRSM and AISoM (Ed), as well as 21+ years of teaching experience.

She is also Head of Harp at the International School of Musicians, giving participants access to an educational pathway founded on recognised assessment standards. The International School of Musicians offers an Ofqual-regulated programme, enabling suitable participants to pursue the Step 1 Harp Certificate or higher, depending on the structure and available time of the voyage.

Helen-Elizabeth’s teaching is informed by specialist training and established technical traditions. Her approach draws on the French technique of Renie and the teaching lineage of renowned harpist and composer David Watkins. This combination of technical heritage, practical experience and warm encouragement helps make the harp accessible without compromising musical standards.

On the Ambassador Cruise Line voyage, Helen-Elizabeth and Cambrian Harps/Discover The Harp are booked as guest lecturers. The Legends of the North , Kirkwall to the Highlands sailing aboard Ambition provides another opportunity to explore the instrument’s history and cultural significance while travelling through the British Isles.

Whether you are a complete beginner or a developing harpist, you will be learning with a team committed to guiding your musical journey with care, clarity and professionalism.

3. Become part of a welcoming musical community

One of the most rewarding aspects of harp lessons at sea is the opportunity to learn alongside other people who share your enthusiasm. The Discover The Harp programme is designed for harpists and beginners to learn, play, perform and enjoy music together.

You do not need to arrive as an experienced performer. The group format allows participants to progress steadily, share discoveries and gain confidence in an informal but purposeful environment. During at-sea days, there is time to revisit techniques, practise new material and experience the unique sound of a harp ensemble.

Depending on the programme, guests may also have the opportunity to:

  • Take part in group workshops
  • Refine playing technique between ports
  • Play in an ensemble
  • Support or join a passenger choir
  • Perform as part of a shared musical experience
  • Explore related traditions through talks and live demonstrations

For experienced harpists, the cruise offers fresh repertoire, new collaborations and a chance to meet fellow musicians. For beginners, it provides the encouragement and structure needed to move from curiosity to confident participation.

The atmosphere is inclusive, yet the educational pathway remains rigorous. Participants may begin as complete novices and work towards a recognised qualification, while more advanced players can use the voyage to deepen their understanding of traditional music, ensemble playing and performance.

4. Play a portable, Made in Wales Discovery 16 harp

A major benefit of the Discover The Harp experience is the opportunity to learn on a Discovery 16 harp, handcrafted in Wales by Derwent Harps.

These compact instruments are designed to fit in airline hand baggage, making them particularly practical for students, travelling musicians, families, teachers and anyone who wants to continue playing after the cruise. Discovery 16 harps can also be personalised with company logos, making them a distinctive choice for educational programmes and group projects.

The Discovery 16 offers a beautifully direct introduction to the harp. Its compact design makes it approachable for beginners, while its clear and resonant sound encourages continued study. It can support progression through recognised examinations, including International School of Musicians assessments from Step 1 to Grade 5.

Guests who fall in love with the instrument during the voyage may be able to continue their journey with a Discovery 16 harp of their own. Speak to the Cambrian Harps team for current information about instrument availability and arrangements.

If you are preparing before you travel, you can also learn harp online with Discover The Harp resources at home. Starting with introductory video lessons and familiarising yourself with the instrument beforehand can help you arrive ready to make the most of your at-sea workshops.

5. Combine a musical achievement with an unforgettable voyage

A Discover The Harp cruise is more than a series of lessons. It is a chance to connect a personal musical achievement with a fascinating journey through northern waters.

The two confirmed 2027 opportunities offer different experiences:

  • The Ambassador voyage aboard Ambition is a focused five-night sailing through Liverpool, Belfast, Kirkwall, Invergordon and Dundee.
  • The Majestic Princess voyage is a 12-day roundtrip from Southampton, combining the British Isles and Northern France with a dedicated Cambrian Harps and Discover The Harp group programme.

Alongside the teaching, there will be the pleasures of cruising: time to reflect, meet fellow passengers, explore ports and enjoy the changing scenery. A lecture-recital may place the harp’s history within a wider cultural story. A Scottish workshop may lead to an unexpected musical connection. A shared performance may become the moment you remember most vividly.

Participants pursuing the Step 1 Harp Certificate or higher can also receive a souvenir workbook, creating a lasting record of the experience and supporting continued study after returning home.

This is a magical way to begin, or renew, your relationship with the harp: learning a traditional instrument, travelling through places steeped in musical history and returning with new skills, new friendships and an experience that cannot be replicated in an ordinary classroom.
