Harping Down a Hill: My Musical Wicker Basket Ride in Madeira

If you had told me a few years ago that I would be hurtling down a steep, winding mountain road in a giant wicker basket while serenading the local residents of Funchal with a harp, I probably would have asked if the sea air had finally gone to my head. Yet, here we are! My latest adventure on the Queen Victoria took me to the stunning island of Madeira, and let me tell you, the "Monte Toboggan" is quite a different experience when you have a lever harp perched on your lap.

As the Director of Cambrian Harps, I am often asked about the "portability" of our instruments. Usually, people mean "can I fit it in my car?" or "is it easy to carry to a wedding?" I decided to take that question to its absolute, most ridiculous conclusion. If a harp can survive a 10-minute descent on wooden runners at 30mph, it can survive anything.

The Ultimate Travel Harp Challenge

Madeira is a place of breathtaking beauty, famous for its wine, its flowers, and its eccentric transportation. The Monte Toboggan ride dates back to the early 19th century when it was used as a practical way for locals to get from the village of Monte down to the city center. Today, it is a thrilling tourist staple. You sit in a wicker sledge, and two men: known as Carreiros: dressed in white uniforms and straw boaters, use their rubber-soled boots as brakes to navigate the corners.

Taking a full-sized pedal harp on this excursion was, naturally, out of the question (unless I wanted to turn the basket into a very expensive splinter). Instead, I brought along one of our specialized mini harps. The portability of our instruments is something we take immense pride in at Cambrian Harps. Whether you are looking at our Discovery 16 Education Bundle or the exquisite Lily Lap Harp, these instruments are designed for the modern, adventurous musician.

Why a Mini Harp?

When you are traveling the world on a ship like the Queen Victoria, space is a premium, but music is a necessity. A travel harp needs to meet three strict criteria:

  • Lightweight Construction: It must be easy to carry through cruise terminals and up cobblestone hills.
  • Tuning Stability: It must hold its pitch despite changes in humidity and the occasional bump on a wicker sledge.
  • Resonant Tone: It shouldn't sound like a toy; it needs to have the professional warmth of a Cambrian instrument.

Our range of small harps, including the Discoverie Brian 16, is built with the same rigorous standards as our larger models. We are committed to guiding you through your musical journey, ensuring that even our smallest harps are crafted with sustainably sourced materials and professional-grade hardware.

The Descent: Speed, Strings, and Scenery

The look on the faces of the Carreiros when I stepped up to the basket with a harp was absolutely priceless. They’ve seen thousands of tourists, but I suspect I’m the first one to attempt a concerto during the descent. Once we were tucked in and the push-off began, the adrenaline kicked in.

There is a specific rhythm to the wicker baskets; the runners clatter against the asphalt, and the wind whistles past your ears. I started playing a light, whimsical melody, and the sound was surprisingly clear. The wooden body of the lever harp resonated beautifully against the wicker of the basket. It was a magical, almost fairy-tale moment: sliding through the narrow streets of Funchal, surrounded by lush greenery, while the strings hummed under my fingers.

Pro Tip for Musical Tobogganing:

  1. Secure your instrument: I used a padded strap to ensure the harp stayed connected to me.
  2. Watch the corners: The G-force on those turns is real!
  3. Don’t drop your tuning key: Trust me, you don’t want to see a Teacher’s Tuning Key bouncing down a Madeira hillside.

The Professional Standard of Cambrian Harps

While this outing was undeniably casual and fun, it underscores a serious point about our brand. At Cambrian Harps, we represent the intersection of traditional craftsmanship and modern versatility. Our association with prestigious institutions and our history of excellence: including a 100% pass rate for students at our associated Derwent Harp School: means that we don’t just build "pretty" instruments. We build tools for expression.

Whether you are a professional looking for a Aoyama Orpheus 47 for the concert hall or a beginner looking to discover the harp for the first time, our standards remain elite. We facilitate your education through specialized workshops and courses, ensuring that every player has the technical foundation to succeed.

Bringing Music to Every Destination

This trip to Madeira followed a fascinating online singing lesson I had earlier in the week. Using the Forte platform and working with Abermusic, I was able to maintain my vocal training while at sea. This is the beauty of the modern musical landscape: your "studio" can be a stateroom on the Queen Victoria, and your "concert hall" can be a wicker basket in Monte.

For those who feel that learning an instrument is a sedentary or daunting task, I invite you to think again. Our Discover the Harp Courses are designed to be inclusive yet elite, welcoming students of all ages and abilities. We take the mystery out of the strings and replace it with a sense of wonder.

Engineering for the Adventurous

You might wonder how a delicate instrument survives such "extreme" conditions. The secret lies in our manufacturing process. At our workshop, we use high-grade materials and precision engineering. For example, our Mali 36 by Harfenland and the Aoyama Kerry 34 are lauded for their durability and structural integrity.

When we design a mini harp, we aren't just shrinking a big one. We are re-calculating string tension and soundboard thickness to ensure that the "travel" aspect doesn't compromise the "harp" aspect. This meticulous attention to detail is why our former students have gone on to win prestigious scholarships and perform at international events. We are committed to maintaining a high-end brand image that reflects the rigor of a professional institution while maintaining the warmth of a mentor.

Let Your Journey Begin

If my ride down the Monte hill proved anything, it’s that the harp is the ultimate companion for any journey. It’s a conversation starter, a mood lifter, and a piece of portable art.
